Feeling conflicted about porn because it goes against your values or moral code of someone else, isn’t the same as having a compulsive sexual behaviour issue. The two can overlap, and when they do, the distress can feel much stronger and more difficult to manage. Part of my approach to therapy is to look at exactly where the source of discontent comes from so we can help you in the most appropriate way.

As a porn therapist, clients often start sessions feeling down, worried or doing things that cause more problems than benefits. Often they may find the things they watch or do are not sitting right with their own values and it starts to cause feelings that are not welcome or they want to change.

Porn therapy isn’t about judgement or being told to just stop. It’s about understanding why this pattern has developed and what it’s doing for you. Drawing a line in the sand and making new choices, re-shaping the behaviours you no longer want.

 

After working together, clients feel happier, more content with life and relationships and find themselves able to stop unhelpful behaviours. 

The focus is on building control, clarity, and a way of relating to sex and yourself that feels more aligned and manageable over time.

I also help couples and offer relationship or marriage counselling for porn addiction and compulsive sexual activity. The aim is to gain understanding about PPU, establish how to repair a relationship together and re-build trust.

What is Pornography Addiction?

For some, watching porn daily is considered normal, while for others, it isn’t. The key issue lies in your relationship with pornography and whether it’s negatively impacting your life. Porn addiction is often referred to as Problematic Porn Use or PPU | Compulsive Sexual Behavior | CSBD - Ultimately, what matters most isn’t the label used, but that my client feel understood, included, and able to access support that genuinely helps free from judgment, blame or shame so you can beat porn addiction and quit PPU and behaviours.

 

Porn addiction is rarely discussed openly, but it is a rapidly growing issue. Few adults would willingly admit they have a problem with porn. Despite the silence surrounding it, pornography addiction is an increasing concern. With ease of access to pornography via the internet, there is an ever-increasing availability of different types of porn at the click of a button.

 

It is then easy to look for something new to bring a new sense of satisfaction and reach the same level of pleasure. This can lead us to looking at ever increasingly new things to try and get the same buzz or sense of excitement.

What Does Pornography Do To The Brain?

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt. Watching porn can alter the way we think and behave. Our brains are wired to seek pleasure, and when we experience something enjoyable, our brain craves more of it. One key neurotransmitter involved in this process is dopamine.

 

While dopamine seeks out pleasure, it quickly becomes bored and because of what porn does to the brain, continually looks for greater stimulation. If you’re finding it difficult to stop watching porn, this could signal you want to stop or change your behaviour.

Dopamine is often linked to feelings of anxiety and depression. When someone is struggling with these mental health challenges, they may turn to pornography to escape their reality and numb emotional pain.

 

Using porn as a form of escapism often leads to other negative consequences, such as guilt and shame. It can also create conflict in relationships, sometimes even resulting in breakups.

 

Perhaps what started out as seemingly harmless has progressed toward the types of porn you no longer enjoy watching like bad dad porn, rough porn or bad porn that leaves you with post nut clarity and wanting to make some change for you.

PPU | Illegal Content | Therapy for Sex Offenders

Sometimes, Problematic Porn Use (or PPU) and what porn does to the brain, can lead to material being viewed that is or may be illegal. If your viewing is potentially leading you down this route then specially trained and experienced therapists are on hand to help via StopSO .

 

#StopSO provide therapy for people who may be in danger of drifting toward this type of material, therapy for sex offenders, support for families of sex offenders and treatment for sexual abuse victims with the aim of protecting children.

Debate and Different Perspectives

​Distress around porn use can come from different places. For some, it’s a genuine sense of losing control; for others, it’s a clash with personal values. Feeling uncomfortable about porn on its own doesn’t necessarily mean there is a compulsive behaviour issue. At the same time, both can exist together and make things feel more intense. Understanding what’s really going on means looking at both how much control you feel you have and how your use fits with your own values. Whilst there is a lot of discussion and disagreement about whether sex and porn are addictive, in the same way as alcohol or substances, many clients identify with the behaviour and compulsion and liken it to an addiction. This is an active and important debate within the therapy field, including voices, who argue that the terms “sex addiction” and “porn addiction” are unethical and clinically unhelpful. These views are respected and taken seriously here. At the same time, many people who seek support use this language because it reflects how distressing and overwhelming their behaviour feels. These terms are therefore used as a starting point for conversation rather than as a diagnosis. Therapy with me is always grounded in each person’s lived experience, respecting GSRD. It isn't about judgment, telling you what is right or wrong, good or bad. It is about understanding what and how your values and truths may be impacted and helping you make the changes you desire. That said, the two can overlap, and when they do, the distress can feel much stronger and more difficult to manage. It is therefore crucial to consider and assess both symptoms and sexual or moral values when someone feels distressed about their pornography use or sexual behaviors and seeks help
