Building Trust and Connection - What Counselling Does

Creating a healthy connection between a therapist and a client is the foundation of therapy and counselling. In my experience, people often want to know how to find the best therapist or enquire about the best therapist for depression for instance. Whilst ensuring a prospective counsellor is adequately trained and has experience dealing with the particular challenge you are experiencing, the best therapists will offer an initial consultaion to get an understanding of this and for you. This also gives you the opportunity to ask any quesrtions you may have and ensure you feel they are a good fit and what you a looking for.

I feel, the therapeutic alliance is essential before change can be made. I prioritise establishing a warm, empathic, and collaborative relationship, using well established counselling and assessment skills that foster genuine trust.

What ever may have happened or be going on for you, counselling can help. Whether you are experiencing isolation and depression, not feeling yourself, feeling sad lonely or lost in life, how can you take care of yourself, or struggling with addiction to pornography, looking for a drug therapist or feel like you are addicted to chat rooms, internet shopping, counselling for gambling or relationship difficulties.

I understand from my own life experience, that things don’t always go how we plan or how we want. Knowing things can be challenging helps build empathy and understanding and helps look at what is going on for you, why things are happening and how to sort things out.

Counselling & Psychotherapy is built on a quality therapeutic relationship. I build that relationship by treating everything we talk about as confidential, being honest, genuine, respectful and non-judgemental.

How to find the right counsellor to support you

In the UK, the titles Counsellor and Psychotherapist are not protected in any way, essentially anyone can use those terms and set themselves up offering therapy despite having no qualifications or experience. Looking for a therapist who is a member of a body listed on the UK Government Professional Standards Register shows an appropriate level of qualification and experience has been obtained. This in turn gives you the assurance you can trust them and work with them confidently.

I am a member of the following bodies which reflects my level of training and professional development. This assures clients I work safely and appropriately to their benefit. Being a member provides clients help to find professional counselling service or psychotherapists.

  • NCPS - National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society - Accredited Professional Member (NCS24-02594) - View Profile

  • ATSAC - Association for the Treatment of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity (00413)

  • AP - Advanced Practitioner Member - Addiction Professionals (007276) - View Profile

  • BACP – British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (206220) - View Profile

The Power of Presence: Providing a Safe and Supportive Space

As a therapist I am asked "what counselling does" and, for me it is to help people who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or not feeling right in some way. I have worked with many client issues including counselling for anger management, addiction, alcoholism, compulsive sexual behaviour disorder (CSBD) sex addiction, problematic porn use, porn addiction and depression, separation and divorce or relationship counselling in Kent. If your topic of concern is not shown please get in touch as this list is not exhaustive.

I have additional training in working with people who use behaviours or substances to cope as a drug and alcohol counsellor or helping with compulsive behaviours that are becoming problematic, as a porn addiction therapist, gambling addiction counselling and sex addiction support.

My approach is non-judgmental, warm, honest, and grounded. I work integratively, using a mix of therapeutic approaches to suit you. Depending on your needs, I tailor the therapy to you as every person is different.

Ethical Excellence: Upholding Confidentiality and Integrity

Ethics are the bedrock of my practice. Navigating sensitive conversations with discretion and professionalism is paramount, preserving confidentiality while gently redirecting focus back to the client’s own experience, not only protects privacy but also encourages deeper introspection and empowerment for the client.

Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk freely about what is causing difficulties, rediscover your strength, and find solutions to the challenges of life.

Why This Approach Works

  • Deep trust accelerates healing – Clients who feel safe and valued open up more readily, allowing for deeper therapeutic breakthroughs.

  • Reflective dialogue enhances self-awareness – Thoughtfully crafted responses empower clients to recognize and reframe their emotional narratives.

  • Ethical integrity strengthens professional credibility – Adhering to strict confidentiality fosters a secure and dependable therapeutic space.

  • Balanced warmth and professionalism inspire long-term growth – A strong therapeutic alliance encourages sustained progress beyond the session.
